Big Money, Small Wins: A Look at Expensive Political Campaigns
California, USAFri Jun 12 2026
Tom Steyer, a former hedge‑fund manager who now focuses on climate issues, has spent more than half a billion dollars on political races that ended in defeat. After pouring $342 million into an unsuccessful presidential bid in 2020, most wealthy candidates would have given up on buying a high‑profile office. Steyer did the opposite, spending an additional $216 million to run for California governor in 2022 – a primary that became the most expensive in the state’s history.
His spending on television ads alone reached $201 million, eclipsing other well‑known self‑funded contenders such as David Trone ($60 million in Maryland’s 2024 Senate primary), Dr. Oz ($27 million for a Pennsylvania Senate run in 2022), and Linda McMahon ($97 million across two Connecticut Senate races).
When adjusted for inflation, Steyer’s $216 million is close to the $144 million that Meg Whitman invested in her 2010 California governor campaign. In total, Steyer has spent over $500 million on campaigns that never won, raising questions about the effectiveness of self‑funded political spending.
