Big News: Medicare Scores Major Wins in Drug Price Talks
USAThu Nov 27 2025
Medicare just scored some serious wins in its latest drug price negotiations. Fifteen drugs will see price drops, with some discounts reaching as high as 85%. This is huge for the over 50 million seniors who rely on Medicare.
The biggest winners? Drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus, which treat obesity and Type 2 diabetes. These drugs will see a massive 71% price cut. That's a huge deal since these drugs can cost around $1, 000 a month right now.
But it's not just about diabetes. Medicare also negotiated lower prices for drugs treating asthma, breast cancer, and leukemia. The discounts vary, with Austedo, a drug for Huntington's disease, seeing a 38% cut.
This all comes from the Inflation Reduction Act, which was passed in 2022. Before this law, Medicare couldn't negotiate drug prices. Now, they can, and it's saving a lot of money. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services say these new prices could have saved $12 billion in 2024 alone.
But here's where things get a bit confusing. There's another deal involving Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic and Wegovy. In that deal, the company agreed to lower the price of these drugs to $245 a month. But in the Medicare negotiations, the price is set at $274 a month. Why the difference? No one's quite sure.
Novo Nordisk says they're still waiting for more details from Medicare. They also mentioned they're not big fans of the government setting drug prices. But they're still committed to making their drugs affordable.
AARP, the group that advocates for older Americans, is happy with the results. They see this as a big step forward in lowering drug prices. And it's not just about the money. Lower drug prices mean better health for millions of seniors.
So, what's next? More negotiations, more savings, and hopefully, more clarity on how these deals will work. One thing's for sure: Medicare is making strides in making drugs more affordable for everyone.

Could the significant discounts on these drugs be a ploy to get seniors hooked on these medications, only to raise prices again in the future?
