Big Shake-Up in US Foreign Aid
Washington DC, USAThu Feb 27 2025
The current administration in the US is making huge changes to how the country gives aid to other nations. The plan is to cut more than 90% of the contracts from the US Agency for International Development. This means that a lot of the money that was going to help other countries will now be stopped.
The administration has sent out a memo and made court filings to explain their plans.
They are claiming that they cannot meet a court-ordered deadline to pay for past work.
The administration asked the supreme court to put a hold on a federal judge’s order requiring the government to pay foreign aid funds to contractors and grant recipients for past work.
A Washington DC federal appeals court denied that request.
The administration believes they have the right to suspend agreements while they review them to see if they follow their policies.
The administration has said that they are terminating 5, 800 of 6, 200 multi-year USAid contract awards, for a cut of $54 billion.
Another 4, 100 of 9, 100 state department grants were being eliminated, for a cut of $4. 4 billion.
The administration is also saying that the nonprofits owe billions of dollars in payment since the freeze began.
The administration is also saying that they have finally begun paying USAid bills again after the month-long halt on payments, freeing for delivery a few million of billions of dollars owed.
The administration is also saying that they are terminating contracts at a rapid pace, without time for any meaningful review.
