A recent study by the New York Times and Ipsos shows that a large majority of Americans don't think transgender athletes, who were born male but identify as female, should compete in women's sports. Among the 2, 128 people surveyed, 79% said they shouldn't be allowed. Democrats, known for their progressive views, also joined this majority, with 67% against the idea. Republicans were even more united, with 94% against. Independents were divided, with only 64% saying no and 26% refusing to answer.
The topic gained attention in 2024 when several stories sparked national debates. The issue became a key point in the 2024 presidential election, particularly for Republicans. A poll by Concerned Women for America found that 70% of moderate voters considered it important, with 6% deeming it the most important issue.
Last year, a Gallup poll revealed that nearly 70% of Americans agree that biological men should not compete in women's sports. Another survey by NORC at the University of Chicago showed that 69% opposed adult transgender females competing in women's sports.
With Trump set to return as President, Republicans are pushing the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. It passed in the House with some Democratic support and will head to the Senate. If successful, Trump could sign it early in his term.
