Big Stop Sign for New Gas Station
Mansfield, Ohio, USAThu Jun 18 2026
A group of local residents has gathered more than 1, 800 signatures on a petition that calls for the cancellation of a planned Buc‑ee’s travel center. The proposed 24/7 complex would occupy over 110 acres at the junction of Interstate 71 and Ohio 39.
The city council had already approved a development plan that would let Buc‑ee’s fund a $15 million infrastructure upgrade. This money would cover three new roundabouts near I‑71 and Lucas Road, a move that the council approved unanimously on June 2.
Township trustees in Madison and Mifflin had earlier agreed to annex the land, a decision that would let the townships keep some revenue while the city collects income tax and water/sewer fees. The county would receive sales‑tax proceeds from the new business.
Farmers and other neighbors have voiced serious concerns. Nick Stadelman, who owns a farm just south of the site, worries that the wide roundabouts will make it difficult for his 18‑foot tractors to turn safely. He told the planning commission that he would have to give up part of his driveway if the project moves forward.
The petition lists a long list of potential problems: environmental damage, traffic hazards, loss of property value, noise and light pollution, and the erosion of farmland. The authors argue that a large gas station is a temporary asset with an inevitable decline in value over time.
Buc‑ee’s project coordinator, Angela Janik, has not yet responded to requests for comment. Those interested can contact Lou Whitmire by phone or on X at @lwhitmir.
