Big Ten Blood Battle: Michigan vs. Ohio State

The University of Michigan Health is gearing up for a major blood drive at the iconic Michigan Stadium on Sunday, November 23. This event, called "Be a Hero at the Big House, " is part of the 43rd annual Blood Battle with Ohio State University. The rivalry isn't on the football field this time but in the number of blood donations collected during October and November. Blood donations often drop during the holiday season, so this pre-season push is crucial. Dr. Robert Ernst, the chief health officer at the University of Michigan, emphasizes the importance of maintaining a steady blood supply. He points out that events like the Blood Battle and the Big House drive are vital for keeping the community's blood supply stable. The event isn't just about donating blood. Participants can also sign up to be organ or bone marrow donors, play games for prizes, and take self-guided tours of the stadium. The tours are scheduled for 9:30 to 10:30 a. m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p. m. The winner of the Blood Battle will be announced during the Michigan-Ohio State football game on November 29. The final drive for donations is on November 26. Donors get a limited-edition T-shirt, snacks, coupons, and a chance to win prizes. Donations made through December 5 also count toward the Abbott We Give Blood Drive, which awards $1 million to the winning university for student health and wellness programs.
