Billy Idol's Punk Rock Journey: A Nomination to Remember
Thu Feb 13 2025
Billy Idol, the legendary punk rocker, has just been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is a big deal for him, as he's been eligible since 2007. He's excited because his longtime guitarist and co-songwriter, Steve Stevens, is also nominated. This means if Billy gets in, Steve will too.
Billy was at the 2024 ceremony, where he performed with Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy's induction was a big moment, and Billy was part of it. He said, "Ozzy called me a rock-and-roll icon, and I was like, Whoa! That’s exciting coming from him. " He also said, "I wasn't expecting it. Swear to God. "
Billy Idol's career has spanned 50 years, and he's seen a lot of changes in the music industry. He started out in punk with Generation X, and he's still going strong. He said, "It was purely for the love. And if it’s led to this, it’s damn well worth it. "
Punk has been underrepresented in the Rock Hall. The last punk act to be properly inducted was Green Day in 2015. MC5 was inducted through a side category last year. Billy hopes his nomination can open up the door for a lot more people from that era to get inducted.
Billy Idol has a lot of memories from the Rock Hall induction back in 1993. He went because he hoped to see Creedence Clearwater Revival reunite and play together. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. But he still had a great time. He got to see Cream and Ginger Baker smoking a cigarette. He said, "It was a chockablock of people whom I grew up listening to. "
Billy Idol's nomination is a big deal for punk rock. He's hoping it can open up the door for a lot more people from that era to get inducted. He's excited about the possibility of being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and he's hoping it can happen.
