This: the first time someone in the United States has died from bird flu. It happened in Louisiana to someone over 65 with health issues and exposure to sick birds. This wasn't just any bird flu case; the virus may have changed inside the person, making them very sick.
Since March, 66 infections have been reported in the U. S. , but this is the first death. Globally, over 950 people have caught bird flu, and more than 460 have died. Experts weren't surprised by this death, as the virus has been deadly before.
A Canadian teen recently got very sick too. Scientists are still figuring out what makes this virus so dangerous for some people. Just because we've seen mild cases doesn't mean all future cases will be mild.
The CDC says there's no sign the virus is spreading from person to person in the U. S. But with the virus spreading among wild birds and other animals, there's a higher chance people will get infected.
Officials are reminding people to be careful when handling sick or dead birds. They should wear protective gear to reduce the risk.
