Birth Control Pills and Shoulder Injuries: What Women Should Know
Mon Apr 27 2026
Researchers have found a link between hormonal birth control and higher chances of shoulder problems in women. The study focused on three types of birth control: estrogen-only, progestin-only, and combined pills. It looked at women of childbearing age and matched them carefully to compare risks fairly.
Shoulder issues like tears, dislocations, and instability were more common in women using hormonal contraceptives. The study didn’t explain why this happens, but hormones like estrogen and progestin might play a role. Estrogen, for example, affects how muscles and tendons work, which could make injuries more likely.
Other factors like age, activity level, and genetics weren’t the main focus here. The study matched participants to control for these differences, making the link between birth control and shoulder problems harder to ignore. Still, researchers caution that this doesn’t mean every woman on hormonal birth control will face shoulder issues.
