Bitcoin Mining with Solar Power: A Smart and Green Solution
United Arab EmiratesWed Jan 22 2025
Bitcoin, the top dog in the cryptocurrency world, has a big problem: it uses a ton of energy and isn't kind to the environment. The proof-of-work system it runs on is to blame. As Bitcoin grows, mining it becomes more popular, especially in places where energy and money costs are low. Researchers decided to check if using solar power to mine Bitcoin could be a good solution. They imagined a huge solar power plant in the United Arab Emirates with a capacity of 50. 91 MW, working together with a Bitcoin mining operation. They looked at both the economic and environmental aspects. Using real-world data, they found that starting this system in 2020 with about $42 million would pay off in about 3. 5 years. If they sold the electricity to the grid instead, it would take 8. 1 years to get the investment back. Plus, this green mining could prevent about 50, 000 tons of CO2 from being released each year.
