Canadian developer Peter Todd found himself in an unexpected spotlight when a new HBO documentary, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, named him as the possible creator of bitcoin, known as Satoshi Nakamoto. The mystery surrounding bitcoin’s creator has been buzzing since 2010, and the documentary, released on October 8, added a new twist to the story. Filmmaker Cullen Hoback, who previously claimed to have identified the person behind QAnon, presented his theory to Todd. Todd was surprised by this turn of events, as he believed the film was about bitcoin’s history, not its creator. Since the documentary aired, Todd has repeatedly denied being Satoshi, suggesting that Hoback made the accusation for marketing purposes. Hoback, however, remains confident in his findings, seeing Todd’s denials as part of a complex misdirection. While they can’t definitively prove Todd is Satoshi, Hoback believes the documentary makes a strong case. Now, Todd faces the challenge of living under the suspicion, having gone into hiding.
