Black Cumin Oil vs Melatonin: What Helps Sleep?

IndiaFri Oct 02 2026

A small study looked at two ways to help people who feel tired even after sleeping. Twenty‑four volunteers with poor‑quality sleep tried black cumin oil extract and a regular melatonin pill. Each person used one treatment for a week, then took a week break, then switched to the other. Neither the participants nor the researchers knew which pill was being taken. The study used a crossover design, meaning everyone tried both treatments.

They measured melatonin in the blood at night while the room was dark. Both treatments raised the hormone level significantly. The black cumin oil reached a set melatonin level earlier than the pill. The pill caused a quick spike that fell fast, while the oil gave a steadier rise through the night. Researchers also noted the timing of the hormone rise to see how it matched the body's internal clock.

Sleep tracking with wrist watches showed that falling asleep faster and sleeping longer improved more with the melatonin pill. However, the black cumin oil lowered the stress hormone cortisol and reduced daytime sleepiness more noticeably. They also asked participants to fill out a simple questionnaire about how sleepy they felt during the day.

The oil showed an earlier rise in melatonin, lower cortisol, and less daytime sleepiness compared to the pill.
