Blazes in the Hollywood Hills: A Night of Fire and Evacuations

Los Angeles, USAThu Jan 09 2025
On the evening of January 8, the Hollywood Hills woke up to a new threat. A fire, later named the Sunset fire, had begun its destructive path between Runyon Canyon and Wattles Park. Firefighters got right to work, combining aerial attacks with ground efforts to tame the flames by around 10:45 PM, as reported by CBS Los Angeles. Despite the progress, evacuation orders stood firm to keep residents safe. The Sunset fire was one of several that had been wreaking havoc across Los Angeles County since Tuesday, fueled by strong winds. It ignited around 5:30 PM and by nightfall had expanded to 43 acres, according to Cal Fire. The mandatory evacuation zone was vast, encompassing areas from Laurel Canyon Boulevard west to Mulholland Drive north, then along the 101 Freeway east to Hollywood Boulevard south. This region, known for its densely packed homes, was very much at risk. The fire's embers reached neighborhoods north of Franklin and Vista, as reported by ABC7. The Hollywood Courthouse, located at 5925 Hollywood Boulevard, would remain closed on January 9 due to the fire. The city set up an emergency shelter at the Pan Pacific Recreational Center on Beverly Boulevard, Mayor Karen Bass announced via Twitter. LAFD crews had to shut down roads, including a significant stretch of Hollywood Boulevard between La Brea Avenue and Crescent Heights Boulevard. The LAPD also jumped in to help ease traffic during the evacuations. Mayor Bass tweeted at 7:45 PM about the efforts to open roads for firefighting vehicles. The cause of the fire was still unknown at the time of reporting.
