BlockFills Declares Bankruptcy as Crypto Market Sinks

Chicago, USATue Mar 17 2026
BlockFills, a Chicago‑based crypto trading house, announced it is filing for Chapter 11 protection in Delaware after months of financial strain. The firm had stopped letting customers withdraw funds on February 6, citing a lack of liquidity that could not be fixed by new investors or buyers. The company entered the bankruptcy court with more than $100 million in debt, and its biggest unsecured creditors include the Chicago Blackhawks. BlockFills explained that a voluntary Chapter 11 filing is the most sensible option to keep the business alive and help recover money for all parties involved. Founded in 2017, BlockFills mainly served wealthy and institutional traders but also branched into crypto‑mining equipment investments and lending. Even though it had a record year in 2024, with $61 billion in trading volume—a 28 % jump—the firm struggled to secure extra capital. A sale to a publicly traded crypto company fell through in November, and an attempt to recapitalize with an existing investor collapsed in February as crypto prices fell sharply.
The firm’s troubles were worsened by lawsuits from unsecured creditors. Dominion Capital sued in New York federal court, accusing BlockFills of hiding the use of customer crypto assets to cover loan defaults and mining losses. Other creditors—007 Capital, Artha Investment Partners, and the Chicago Blackhawks—also filed claims ranging from $6. 9 million to over $4. 7 million. The broader crypto market has seen a $2 trillion drop in value during the so‑called crypto winter. Bitcoin, which hit a high of $126 000 in October 2023, fell to about $60 000 last month and is now around $74 000. BlockFills marks the first major crypto firm to file for bankruptcy amid this downturn, following the collapse of FTX in 2022 and its subsequent impact on Chicago’s crypto scene. While Bitcoin has rebounded some from February lows, the market remains volatile and faces another potential cold snap in 2026.
