Alzheimer's disease is a complex brain condition that currently has limited treatment options. Scientists are focusing on a protein called BACE-1, which is a key player in the disease. To find new ways to block this protein, researchers used a method called virtual screening. They examined 20, 000 tiny molecules and picked the top 45 based on how well they might fit and bond with BACE-1. Four of these molecules showed real promise.
One, labeled 5784196, was especially effective with a score of 0. 25 µM. Even better, it stopped the harmful amyloid-β from clumping together. Scientists then used computer models to understand how this molecule interacts with and stays stable with BACE-1. This discovery shows that virtual screening could be a quick and cost-effective way to find potential treatments for Alzheimer's.
