Blue Checks Arrive on Bluesky
USAMon Apr 21 2025
Bluesky is introducing a new way to verify accounts, similar to the blue check marks seen on other social media platforms. This change comes as the platform has seen a surge in users since it opened to the public in early 2024. Before this, users could verify themselves by adding custom domains to their profiles. Now, Bluesky is taking a more hands-on approach. The platform's team will identify important accounts and give them blue check marks. This includes government officials, news outlets, journalists, and celebrities. The goal is to reduce fake accounts and make Bluesky a safer place for public figures.
The move to adopt a familiar verification system is not revolutionary. However, it is a smart strategy. Other social networks, like Instagram and TikTok, have used similar methods because the blue check mark has become a widely recognized symbol of authenticity. When Elon Musk changed Twitter's verification system, it lost some of its trustworthiness. Outside of Twitter, though, the blue check mark still signals that an account is likely genuine.
Bluesky is also introducing "trusted verifier" status for certain organizations. These organizations will get a special blue check mark with a scalloped edge. The New York Times and WIRED are among the first to receive this status. Users will be able to see which organizations verified an account by clicking on the blue check mark. This approach aligns with Bluesky's focus on decentralization and is practical given the platform's small team.
Users can expect to see the first official blue check marks on Bluesky today. This new verification system aims to create a more trustworthy environment on the platform. It is a response to the increasing number of impersonators and the need for a reliable way to confirm an account's legitimacy. As Bluesky continues to grow, these changes will help ensure that users can trust the accounts they follow.
