Boeing's Big Move: New Beginnings for Jeppesen ForeFlight
Boeing has finalized a significant deal, selling several of its digital aviation businesses to Thoma Bravo, a private equity firm, for a staggering $10.55 billion. The sale includes prominent brands such as Jeppesen, ForeFlight, AerData, and OzRunways.
The New Entity: Jeppesen ForeFlight
The newly formed company, Jeppesen ForeFlight, will operate independently with offices in Denver and San Francisco. Boeing aims to concentrate on its core business of aircraft manufacturing while reducing debt and strengthening its financial position.
Thoma Bravo's Vision
Thoma Bravo is enthusiastic about the acquisition, believing these businesses will thrive independently. They plan to foster growth, innovation, and enhance software and customer service.
Leadership and Future Plans
Brad Surak, former head of Boeing's Digital Aviation Solutions, will lead Jeppesen ForeFlight. He expresses optimism about the new structure, anticipating faster decision-making, broader thinking, and increased innovation.
Additional Sales and Retained Assets
Boeing is also exploring the sale of its defense subsidiary, Insitu, which manufactures small, long-range military drones. Analysts estimate this sale could range from $500 million to $1 billion.
Despite selling most of its Digital Aviation Solutions business, Boeing will retain parts focused on fleet maintenance, diagnostics, and repair services, along with predictive and prognostic maintenance insights. These services are crucial for maintaining aircraft in optimal condition and preventing future issues.
