Bolsonaro's Long Legal Journey Ends in Prison
Brasilia, BrazilWed Nov 26 2025
Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, has been ordered to start his prison term. The Supreme Court made this decision. Bolsonaro was found guilty of trying to stay in power after losing the 2022 election. He will serve his sentence in a federal police jail in Brasilia.
Bolsonaro is 70 years old. He was accused of leading a plot to keep himself in power. The court said he knew about plans to harm his political rivals. These plans included assassinating Lula and his running mate. They also included arresting and executing a Supreme Court justice.
The plot did not succeed. The military leaders did not support it. Lula took office without any problems. But a week later, Bolsonaro's supporters caused a riot. They stormed government buildings. Over 1, 500 people were arrested.
The court found that Bolsonaro had encouraged the riot. His plan was for the military to bring him back to power. Because of this, Bolsonaro cannot run for office until 2060. That is eight years after his sentence ends.
Bolsonaro has called the trial unfair. He says it is a way to stop him from running in the next election. The court has also ordered other co-conspirators to start their sentences. These include two former generals.
Bolsonaro's health is not good. The court has ordered full-time medical care for him. He was caught trying to tamper with his ankle monitor. He said he was not trying to escape. He blamed his actions on medicine-induced paranoia.
