Boosting Business Chats: The Rise of Manychat
Wed Apr 23 2025
In today's digital age, chatbots and AI agents are everywhere. But not all of them are equally useful. Manychat, a company specializing in business messaging, has just secured $140 million in funding. This cash injection will help them enhance their platform with more AI features. The funding round was led by Summit Partners.
Manychat's success story is impressive. With around 1. 5 million customers spread across 170 countries, they handle billions of messages annually. Their client list includes big names like Nike, the New York Times, and Yahoo, as well as individual creators and smaller businesses. The company's trajectory has been remarkable, especially considering they had only raised around $23 million until this point.
The plan is to use the new funds to invest in research and development, particularly to integrate more AI into their platform. This will help them stay competitive in a rapidly evolving market. Additionally, the funds will boost their sales, marketing, and support efforts globally. Despite the competitive landscape, Manychat has managed to stay profitable, operating on the edge of break-even.
Manychat's journey began in 2015 when the co-founders, Mike Yan and Anton Gorin, saw an opportunity in the rise of smartphone-based messaging apps. Back then, email was becoming a less effective medium for business communication. Yan, a Telegram user, saw the potential when Telegram opened up its APIs. This led to the creation of Manychat, initially as a tool for businesses to communicate on Telegram.
The real breakthrough came when Facebook opened up its APIs for Messenger. This allowed Manychat to reach 350 million users monthly, with billions of messages and an impressive open rate of 80%. Additional APIs opening up across other Meta-owned platforms and TikTok further boosted their growth. Today, Instagram is their most engaged and active platform.
Manychat's approach to chatbots is unique. They focus on encouraging further actions from users, which sets them apart from many other chatbots on the market. This engagement layer is what makes Manychat a solid bet for the future of messaging platforms, according to Sophia Popova, the Summit partner who led the investment.
The rapid development of AI and the emergence of AI chatbots like Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Google’s Gemini pose both opportunities and challenges. Manychat is working to build in more AI features to improve their offering and stay ahead of the competition. The future of business communication is evolving, and Manychat is positioning itself to be at the forefront of this change.
