Walking into a classroom where everyone feels welcome and accepted. This is the power of an inclusive classroom climate, especially important during times of conflict and division. But how do we make sure our schools foster such environments? A recent study in Germany decided to test this by introducing the HateLess anti-hate speech program to see if it could make a difference.
Over a thousand students aged 12 to 16 from 11 schools took part. Half of them completed a week-long anti-hate speech program, while the other half didn't. A month later, the results were clear: students who went through the HateLess program felt their classrooms were more inclusive and cohesive. They also showed higher levels of empathy and confidence in their ability to handle hate speech. Interestingly, the positive effects didn't stop at just feeling more included. The study found that the more inclusive and connected students felt in their classrooms, the more empathetic and confident they became. This suggests that creating a supportive classroom environment can have a ripple effect on how students treat each other and handle challenging situations.
