Border Tensions: Thailand and Cambodia Ignore Trump's Call for Peace

Trouble is still brewing on the Thailand-Cambodia border. Even after U. S. President Trump said both countries agreed to stop fighting, the shooting hasn't ceased. Thai officials say they never agreed to a truce, and Cambodia hasn't said anything about Trump's claim. Instead, Cambodian media reported that Thai jets were bombing areas on Saturday morning. This isn't the first time things have heated up. Back in December, a small fight wounded two Thai soldiers and ruined a previous ceasefire that Trump had helped set up. That truce had ended five days of fighting in July over who owns what land. Malaysia helped make that deal happen, and Trump even threatened to take away trade benefits if Thailand and Cambodia didn't agree. They officially agreed to more details in October at a meeting in Malaysia. So far, about two dozen people have been killed this week, and hundreds of thousands have had to leave their homes. Thailand says 11 of its soldiers have died, and they think around 165 Cambodian soldiers have been killed. Cambodia hasn't said how many soldiers have died but reports that 11 civilians have been killed and 76 injured. Trump said on Friday that after talking to the leaders of both countries, they agreed to stop shooting and go back to the original peace deal he helped make. But Thailand's prime minister said peace depends on Cambodia stopping its attacks first. The Thai foreign ministry also said Trump's claim about a ceasefire wasn't true. Meanwhile, Cambodia's prime minister thanked Trump and Malaysia's prime minister for their efforts but didn't mention any ceasefire. Thailand is bombing what it says are military targets, while Cambodia is firing BM-21 rockets. These rockets aren't very accurate and can't be aimed precisely. Most have landed in areas where people have already left, but on Saturday, one hit a civilian area in Thailand, seriously injuring two people who were running to a bunker for safety.
