Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson found herself in a tight spot financially. She decided to hire a family member to her staff, while hiding their relation from the city. This was just the start of her scheme to misuse taxpayer money. She planned to get a $13, 000 bonus for the staff member, with part of it coming back to her. The kickback happened in a Boston City Hall bathroom, with $7, 000 changing hands.
Fernandes Anderson was arrested early one morning at her Dorchester home. She was charged with wire fraud and stealing federal funds. This isn't the first time she's been in trouble. She previously paid a $5, 000 penalty for hiring her sister and son to her staff. Facing financial struggles again, she chose to break the rules instead of finding legal solutions.
The city's taxpayers paid her salary of around $103, 500, but she didn't use it wisely. Her actions show a lack of responsibility and respect for the public's trust. It's crucial to question why someone in a position of power would break the law, especially when it involves public funds.
