Boston is facing a tough flu season. Two very young kids, both under 2 years old, have died from the flu. This brings the total number of child flu deaths in the state to four this season.
The city has seen a big jump in flu cases. From December 14 to December 27, 2025, confirmed flu cases went up by 126%. Hospital visits for flu-related issues also increased by 135%. This is a big deal because the flu can be really serious, especially for little kids.
Children under 5 are getting hit hard. In just two weeks, hospitalizations for this age group shot up by 150%. That's double the number from last year at this time. Most people in the hospital are adults over 65, but the rise in young kids is worrying.
The Boston Public Health Commission is urging everyone over six months old to get vaccinated. They are working with schools, hospitals, and other groups to track cases and stop the spread. They are also setting up free vaccine clinics in January.
Parents are being told to watch for serious symptoms in their kids. If a child has trouble breathing, a high fever, or seems very lethargic, they should seek medical help right away. Simple steps like washing hands, staying home when sick, and wearing masks in crowded places can also help.
This flu season is a reminder that even a mild illness can turn serious quickly. Taking precautions and getting vaccinated can make a big difference.
