Boxer’s Honest Reckoning After Loss
USASat Jun 20 2026
Errol Spence shares a raw confession about why he fell short against Terence Crawford. In a recent podcast interview, the former welterweight champion explained that his training camp was marred by gaps and poor preparation. He highlighted a six‑week stretch without sparring partners and the absence of southpaw drills, which left him ill‑equipped for Crawford’s style.
Spence did not hold back when criticizing his head trainer, Derrick James. He described a regimen that focused solely on mitt work, lacking real‑time blocking and defensive practice. “We only did mitts, ” he said. “No gloves, no real sparring. ” Spence hinted that a fuller explanation would surface after his retirement, implying deeper issues with the coaching approach.
Beyond training, Spence admitted that his personal life contributed to the defeat. He confessed to a lifestyle of drinking and lax conditioning outside camp, especially after a car accident in 2022 that made him question his future in boxing. He said he chose the Crawford fight for the financial reward, even though he knew his body was not in peak condition.
The boxer emphasized that a disciplined off‑camp routine is essential. “If you live right outside camp, it’s easier to get back into shape once the training starts, ” he said. He also noted that he has now returned to a healthier routine, hoping it will aid his next bout.
Spence is slated to take on Tim Tszyu in a fight set for July 26 in Australia, where he aims to prove that he has learned from his past mistakes.
