Did you know that professional boxers were recently tested in a virtual reality (VR) world with blurry vision? Researchers wanted to see if blur would mess up their performance or change how they look at their opponents. In this VR boxing setup, boxers had to dodge and counterattack against punches. They experienced three types of vision: central blur, peripheral blur, and normal vision as a control. Surprisingly, blur didn't really ruin their game.
However, it did alter their focus. For example, when they had peripheral blur, they stared more at the head and less at the left hand and torso. This study suggests that boxing can handle some artificial blur. Future work might look into whether this VR training with blur could help boxers get better, adapt to new situations, or recover from injuries.
