Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Coup Charges
BrazilFri Nov 22 2024
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been indicted along with 36 others for allegedly trying to stage a coup after losing the 2022 elections. The federal police handed over their findings to the Supreme Court, which will decide if there's enough evidence to charge Bolsonaro. He denies all claims.
The court will review the 700-page police document. Among those indicted are Bolsonaro's running mate, former Army commander, and veteran advisor. Several former and current aides also face charges.
The investigation began last year. It also looks into Bolsonaro's role in smuggling diamonds and falsifying COVID-19 vaccination statuses, both of which he denies. Another probe found he tried to discredit the voting system, leading to his bar from running until 2030.
Expert Carlos Melo from Insper University in Sao Paulo says these investigations have weakened Bolsonaro's position. He can't run in 2026 and faces potential jail time if convicted.
On Tuesday, police arrested five people, including military and a federal officer, for plotting to overthrow the government and kill President Lula.
