Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Serious Charges
BrazilWed Feb 19 2025
Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, is in hot water. He's been formally accused of leading a plot to overthrow the government and stay in power after losing the 2022 election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The country's attorney-general alleges that Bolsonaro was the mastermind behind a criminal organization aiming to disrupt democracy.
The plot was extensive. Thirty-three others were involved, including high-ranking military officials and Bolsonaro's former vice-presidential candidate. The plan was to assassinate Lula and prevent him from taking office. The supreme court now has to decide if these charges hold up and if Bolsonaro should face trial. If found guilty, he could face a long jail sentence.
Bolsonaro has always denied these allegations. He claims he's being targeted for political reasons. He's already been banned from running for office until 2030 due to his attacks on the electoral system. On top of that, he's facing other legal troubles, like falsifying a Covid-19 vaccine certificate and illegally selling state-given jewels.
The attorney-general's filing to the supreme court is detailed. It describes a well-organized criminal group led by Bolsonaro, aiming to disrupt the 2022 election results. The charges are based on a federal police report from last November. Bolsonaro's legal team, however, insists he's innocent and that the investigations found no evidence linking him to the plot.
The alleged plot, known as the "Green and Yellow Dagger, " had a chilling goal: to murder Lula, his running mate, and a supreme court justice. High-ranking officials, including the former navy commander and a previous head of intelligence, were among the accused. The plot failed due to a lack of support from top army commanders, but Bolsonaro was reportedly aware of and agreed with the plan to kill Lula.
The criminal organization began in June 2021. Bolsonaro's repeated attacks on Brazil's electronic voting system played a role in the alleged coup attempt. He claimed the system was vulnerable to fraud, but never provided evidence. The plot is also linked to an insurrection in Brasília on January 8, 2023, where thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed government buildings, claiming the election was rigged.
Recently, Bolsonaro has been trying to rally conservative forces in Congress to pass an amnesty law for crimes related to the unrest. Opponents see this as a move to help Bolsonaro's own legal troubles. The situation in Brazil is tense, and the outcome of these charges could have significant implications for the country's political future.
