As the bright red charter bus departed from Arlington, a group of about 40 people, bound together by the shared experience of losing loved ones to violent crime, embarked on a journey to Washington D. C. Their destination was the first-ever Crime Survivors Speak March on Washington, a historic event that aimed to bring thousands of voices together to advocate for change in how crime victims are treated.
The group, consisting of friends, family members, and strangers who had found solace in each other's company, had gathered outside an Arlington hotel earlier that morning to pray together. They asked God for a safe trip and for others to never have to endure the pain that violent crime has inflicted upon them. With a collective "amen" and a final honk, the bus hit the road, carrying with it a sense of hope and determination.
The Crime Survivors Speak March on Washington was more than just a rally; it was a powerful statement of unity and resilience. The event aimed to advance a new era of victims' rights and public safety priorities, one that prioritized crime prevention, community health, rehabilitation, economic mobility, and trauma recovery for all. For the families and friends of victims, this march represented a chance to mourn their loved ones, call for solutions to break the cycles of crime, and work towards healing.
Cathy Taylor, Kevin Tarver, and Melinda Hamilton, all of whom had lost a child to gun violence, were the organizers of the trip. They had brought together individuals from across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, who had traveled together before to bring attention to the need for policy change. This time, their goal was to join thousands of others in calling for change and to amplify the voices of survivors.
"We don't want others to go through what we've been through and face the barriers we've faced," Taylor said. "This is so important. " Tarver and Hamilton nodded in agreement, their voices filled with a sense of determination and urgency.
As the bus journeyed towards Washington D. C. , the passengers were not just preparing for a rally; they were preparing to break the silence that had shrouded their lives for so long. They were preparing to speak out against the injustices they had faced and to demand change. And they were preparing to find solace in the knowledge that they were not alone.
