Breast Density: What It Means and Why It Matters
USASun Oct 13 2024
Ever heard of breast density? It's a normal thing that about 40% of women over 40 have. But what does it mean? Well, when you get a mammogram, the doctor checks your breast tissue. There are four types: mostly fatty, mostly glandular, mixed, or extremely dense. Dense just means there's more glandular and fibrous tissue. Why does it matter? Because if you have dense breasts, it can be harder to spot cancer on a mammogram.
You see, on a mammogram, cancer looks white, just like dense tissue. So, if your breasts are dense, a small cancer might be hidden. That's why doctors might suggest extra tests, like an ultrasound or MRI, to be sure. But don't worry, having dense breasts doesn't mean you'll get cancer. It just means we need to be a bit more careful when checking for it.
So, what should you do? Talk to your doctor. They can help you understand your breast density and decide if you need extra tests. And remember, mammograms are still the best way to find cancer early. They're like the gold standard!
