'Brisbane 2032: Sports Cut? Maybe Not Forever'
Lausanne, SwitzerlandWed May 27 2026
'The president of the International Olympic Committee, Kirsty Coventry, told sports leaders that any sports removed from Brisbane 2032 could come back in later Games. She said the change is not permanent.
Coventry warned that future Olympics must be easier to run and cheaper. She wants fewer sports than the 36 in Los Angeles 2028.
Brisbane might have fewer than 353 medal events too. She admitted some people will not like this, but the aim is to keep every sport alive in some form.
The main goal is to cut the number of venues needed, which helps reduce costs. Extra venues create extra money and complexity.
A big meeting in June will decide how the program is chosen for Brisbane and beyond. The list of sports could be announced in September, with details later.
Some sports are more at risk than others. Modern pentathlon has always been in danger of being dropped. New sports added for Los Angeles, like flag football and squash, will have to prove themselves before Brisbane.
Coventry also paused the 2036 Olympic bid process last year, leaving Qatar as a possible host. The decision will affect the whole region. '
