Britain Takes Action Against Israel's West Bank Policies
LondonTue May 20 2025
The British government made a bold move. It stopped trade talks with Israel and slapped sanctions on West Bank settlers. This happened after Israel's recent actions in Gaza and the West Bank. The U. K. is not happy with Israel's blockade of Gaza. This blockade has led to a serious food crisis. Even the U. S. , Israel's closest friend, has raised concerns.
The British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, had strong words. He said the U. K. can't talk trade with a government doing harmful things in Gaza and the West Bank. He called out Israel's blocking of aid and the spreading of settlements. Lammy said these actions are wrong and must stop.
The sanctions target three individuals, two settler outposts, and two groups supporting violence against Palestinians. Lammy said these settlements are growing with the Israeli government's support. Israel's Foreign Ministry didn't take this lightly. They called the sanctions unfair and regretted the stopped trade talks.
This isn't the first time Israel has faced criticism. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other leaders have spoken out. They've called for a ceasefire and more aid to Gaza. Starmer said the war has gone on too long. He can't stand by while people in Gaza suffer.
Israel's actions have led to a lot of deaths. Over 53, 000 Palestinians have died, many of them women and children. The latest attacks have killed over 300 people. France, the U. S. , the EU, the U. K. , and Canada have all hit Israeli settlers with sanctions. These measures freeze assets and ban travel. But they haven't stopped the violence.
The situation is complex. Israel says it's fighting Hamas militants. But others see it as a systematic attempt to expel Palestinians. The U. K. 's actions show that even close allies are losing patience. They want Israel to change its ways. The world is watching, and history will judge.
