British Paratroopers Drop Supplies to Island Facing Virus
Tristan da Cunha, United KingdomMon May 11 2026
A small team of British soldiers and doctors jumped from a big airplane to Tristan da Cunha, the world’s most isolated island. They brought medicine and oxygen because a man on a cruise ship was sick with a possible hantavirus infection. The flight started from England, stopped in Ascension Island, and then flew 3, 000 km south to the island. The plane was refueled in mid‑air by a support aircraft.
The operation is the first time the UK military has used parachutes to give medical help. The soldiers and clinicians landed on the island’s small beach, where normally only two health workers are available. They carried supplies that were needed urgently for the patient who was being kept in isolation.
Tristan da Cunha has only about 200 residents and no airport. It is far from any mainland, more than 2, 400 km away from the nearest inhabited place. Because of its remoteness, medical help usually comes by boat, but in this case airdrop was the fastest option.
Earlier in May, another British passenger from the same cruise ship had been flown to South Africa for treatment. The island’s health authorities said the patient was stable after receiving care from a military plane that delivered testing kits to Ascension Island.
The presence of paratroopers and medical staff from the sky has given islanders hope that help is coming quickly. It shows how the military can adapt to support people in even the most isolated locations.
