Brooks Defends Tough Ref in Heat of Playoff Controversy
United States, USASat May 16 2026
Dillon Brooks, a forward for the Phoenix Suns, recently took to Twitch to defend NBA referee Tony Brothers during the heated 2026 playoffs.
Brothers has drawn a lot of attention, especially after being physically restrained during a Western Conference semifinal and serving as the main official in a controversial Cavaliers‑Pistons game that went to overtime.
In his clip, Brooks praised Brothers for standing firm and not backing down under pressure—traits he sees as rare in the league. He argued that many young referees let emotions guide their calls, whereas Brothers relies on what he actually observes.
Brooks also mentioned Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander’s flopping controversy, noting that inexperienced officials might be swayed by theatrics while veterans like Brothers focus on genuine fouls.
His support is notable because Brooks himself has accumulated 18 technical fouls in the season, earning a suspension earlier. He often feels that referees hold a “stigma” against him, making his defense of Brothers even more striking.
Other Suns figures, including owner Mat Ishbia and player Devin Booker, have also voiced concerns about officiating consistency. The playoff debate over refereeing quality is likely to intensify as the series progress.
