Brutal Attack on Doctor Sparks Widespread Protests
Kolkata, IndiaWed Oct 09 2024
A man has been accused of the gruesome murder and rape of a female doctor in Kolkata, sparking massive nationwide protests over the persistent issue of gender violence in India. The incident took place at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the doctor was found dead with multiple injuries, including signs of sexual assault, in a seminar hall. The accused, a civic volunteer with Kolkata police, was arrested shortly after the body was discovered.
For weeks, doctors across India have taken to the streets demanding justice and improved safety measures for health workers. In Kolkata, junior doctors have gone on a prolonged strike, calling for enhanced security in hospitals and an investigation into corruption in the healthcare sector. The protests have gained support from medical bodies in various states, urging doctors at government hospitals to stop providing elective services until the case is fast-tracked and protective committees are established for health workers.
The West Bengal government has promised to meet some of the protesters' demands, including replacing key officials involved in handling the case. However, the Supreme Court criticized the state's decision to avoid assigning female doctors to night duties, insisting that security measures should be implemented instead of concessions.
This brutal attack is just one in a series of violent incidents against healthcare professionals in India. A 2015 survey by the Indian Medical Association revealed that 75% of doctors had faced some form of violence. The 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, which garnered international attention, led to legal reforms but rape cases remain a grave issue, with over 31,500 cases reported in 2022 alone. Experts warn that the actual numbers could be much higher due to the stigma surrounding the victims.
