Tiny bubbles dancing through water, helping tiny algae grow bigger. These aren't regular bubbles; they're micro-nano bubbles, or MNBs for short. Scientists used them to boost the power of Chlorella vulgaris algae to clean water.
The world's water is facing a big problem: antibiotics are polluting our groundwater. These are medicines that help us fight infections, but when they get into our water, they can cause harm. The problem is, there aren't many good ways to clean them up.
So, scientists tried something new. They added MNBs to water mixed with Chlorella vulgaris algae. This algae is known for its ability to clean water. The bubbles helped the algae grow stronger.
They tested how well this worked by changing different things, like how much antibiotic or algae there was, and how long they mixed everything together. They also looked at what happens when there are other ions in the water.
The results were surprising. The bubbles helped the algae grow 2. 48 times bigger and cleaned the antibiotics much better. The more algae there was, and the more ions, the better the cleaning. But the longer they mixed everything, and the more antibiotics there were at first, the worse the cleaning got.
They even looked at how the algae cleaned the antibiotics using special tools called SEM and FT-IR. They found that groups like -NH, -OH, -C=O, -CH2, and -C-O-C helped in the cleaning process.
So, the bubbles and algae team worked well together. They proved that this new method could be a great way to clean antibiotics from our groundwater.
