Bubbly Trouble: Topo Chico Recall Due to Bacteria
TexasLouisiana, USAWed Jun 04 2025
A popular sparkling water has been pulled from shelves in two states. Topo Chico, a favorite among Costco shoppers, is facing a recall due to potential bacterial contamination. The issue involves Pseudomonas, a type of bacteria commonly found in soil and water. This recall is not a surprise, as bacteria can easily find their way into products during manufacturing.
The affected bottles were sold in bulk packs at Costco stores in Texas and Louisiana. The recall covers 18-packs of 16. 9-ounce glass bottles sold between May 20 and May 29, 2025. To check if your Topo Chico is part of the recall, look for the lot code 13A2541. This code is printed on both the cardboard cases and the necks of the bottles. If you have any of these bottles, do not drink the water. The manufacturer, Coca-Cola, has voluntarily initiated the recall to ensure consumer safety.
Pseudomonas bacteria are generally not a big threat to healthy individuals. However, they can be dangerous for people with weakened immune systems. These individuals, as well as those who are hospitalized or use medical devices, are at higher risk. Pseudomonas bacteria are known for their resistance to many antibiotics. The most common type to cause infections in humans is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Infections can occur in various parts of the body, leading to symptoms like fever, pain, and inflammation. If you have a compromised immune system and suspect an infection, seek medical help right away. Otherwise, minor cases usually resolve within a few days with proper treatment.
Costco has advised customers to return the recalled products to their local warehouse for a full refund. If you have any questions or concerns, you can reach out to Coca-Cola at 1-800-438-2653. The company emphasizes that the safety and quality of their products are their top priorities. If you or someone in your household falls ill after consuming the recalled water, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of food and beverage safety. Bacteria can contaminate products at any stage of production. Consumers should always be vigilant and check for recalls, especially if they or someone in their household has a weakened immune system. Staying informed and taking prompt action can help prevent potential health risks.
