Buffy’s New Show Fizzles: One Executive Says It All
Los Angeles, CA, USATue Mar 17 2026
The buzz about a new Buffy series died out fast, leaving fans and the cast stunned.
Sarah Michelle Gellar shared her side on Instagram and in a recent interview, saying the decision came from a single person at Hulu.
She was surprised to hear the call while her film “Ready or Not 2” opened at SXSW and a director friend was heading to the Oscars.
Gellar felt that timing hurt both her and the audience, who had been excited for a fresh take on the Slayer.
In contrast to her own bluntness, director Chloé Zhao kept her comments vague, hinting that the cancellation was “unavoidable. ”
Gellar argued that a key executive had openly admitted he never watched the original series, making it hard to respect a show that meant so much to fans.
She didn’t name the executive, but reports point to Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich as the likely decision‑maker.
The pilot script had been rewritten to be more mature and include Gellar’s character, which many thought would win approval.
However, the new version was reportedly too expensive for Hulu’s budget, and the network doubted it would meet expectations set by the beloved original.
Erwich allegedly called off the project late Friday, ending the revival’s chances.
Gellar says the story of Buffy lives on, and fans still deserve a quality show.
She hopes someone will revive the franchise with respect for its legacy and the viewers who love it.
