Building a Better Downtown: MU's Plan for a Fun and Thriving Campus
The University of Missouri is actively searching for developers to transform its campus into a vibrant entertainment and hospitality hub. The primary objective is to enhance the area's liveliness, particularly on game days, and stimulate the local economy.
Development Zones
The university has earmarked three strategic zones for development:
North Campus and Central Business District
- Key locations: Fifth and Locust streets, Tenth and Locust streets, University Avenue
Campus Core
- Key areas: Flat Branch Creek, Stadium Boulevard
Athletic Sports Complex
- Key locations: Hearnes Complex, Gustin Golf Course
Community Perspective
Nickie Davis, the executive director of the Downtown Community Improvement District, supports the initiative but emphasizes the importance of preserving downtown Columbia's historic charm. She envisions the growth attracting more small, local businesses and anticipates varied regulations for the entertainment zones, including noise ordinances and open container policies.
Developer Responsibilities
The university is inviting developers to propose projects such as hotels, restaurants, housing, and an entertainment district within these zones. Developers will be responsible for funding their projects, with the university open to bonding if necessary.
