'Building a Healthier America: The Truth About Marijuana Policy'
California, USA, Los Angeles,Fri Jan 17 2025
The new administration has a chance to tackle drug issues head-on. Recently, voters have realized the harms of legalizing pot, rejecting many such measures. It's crucial to prevent future problems, especially since today's marijuana is much stronger.
Federal agencies, like the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), have a role to play in protecting public health. They should prevent marijuana use and hold the industry responsible. For instance, California passed a law allowing public marijuana smoking. However, this smoke can be more harmful than tobacco smoke, containing similar cancer-causing chemicals. So, HHS should create strict guidelines against indoor marijuana smoking, just like they did with cigarettes.
Transparency in the medical marijuana industry is also important. HHS could create a public registry of doctors who overprescribe medical marijuana, similar to how they handled opioids. A recent investigation found doctors giving out thousands of marijuana cards, similar to the "pill mills" that fueled the opioid crisis.
Last year, the FDA changed how marijuana is classified, creating lower standards. This could affect other dangerous drugs too. HHS should guide the FDA to use a science-based approach for drug scheduling.
The Trump-Vance administration should reject moving marijuana to Schedule III because it doesn't meet the legal definition. Doing so would help corporations, allowing them to deduct advertising costs. Marijuana is harming many Americans, with 3 in 10 users becoming addicted. The incoming administration needs to focus on helping people get treatment.
Federal law enforcement also has a part to play. They can prevent distribution to minors, curb drugged driving, and investigate illegal activities in state-legal dispensaries. By targeting the worst actors, law enforcement can shut down harmful operations.
To promote public safety, the administration should tackle illegal marijuana grows, especially those on federal lands. These are often controlled by cartels and damage the environment. A new national anti-drug media campaign is needed, one that uses both traditional and social media to educate young people about the dangers of drugs.
While all drugs need attention, marijuana, with its high addiction rate, is a significant issue. If President Trump wants to make America healthy again, he must address this.
