Building Apps with AI: Nothing's Bold Move
Tue Sep 30 2025
Nothing, a smartphone company, has introduced a new AI tool called Playground. This tool lets users create small apps using simple text commands. These apps, called widgets, can do things like track flights, show upcoming meetings, or even have a virtual pet. More tech-savvy users can tweak the code to make the apps work better. However, full-screen apps aren't possible yet because the technology isn't advanced enough.
This launch comes shortly after Nothing raised a huge amount of money, $200 million, to develop AI-powered devices and software. The CEO, Carl Pei, thinks smartphone companies are slow to change their software. He believes AI can make operating systems more personal and useful. Currently, Nothing has only one AI app, Essential Space, which does things like share screenshots and transcribe meetings. But most smartphones already do these things.
Nothing is a small player in the smartphone market, with less than 1% of the global market share. But Pei sees this as an advantage, allowing them to focus on AI-specific hardware. However, creating apps with AI has challenges, like security and maintenance. Pei acknowledges these issues and says keeping user data safe while allowing app creation is crucial.
For now, Nothing isn't charging for these AI tools. The focus is on building a community around Playground and rewarding good contributions. This move shows Nothing's ambition to innovate, but only time will tell if it can compete with bigger tech giants.
