Penn State’s new head coach, Matt Campbell, sees a storm of challenges coming in the 2026 season. He says the real test will be whether his team can stay united when they fall behind or face tough quarters. The coach believes that a tight bond among players is the key to overcoming adversity. Campbell’s squad is made up of athletes from 19 different schools. The first weeks of winter training felt stiff, with many players keeping to themselves. By the fourth or fifth week, however, a sense of camaraderie began to form. “Everyone in that building feels close, ” one guard explained, highlighting how the group’s cohesion grew over time. Injuries have added another layer of difficulty. Several starters missed parts of spring practice, spending time in the rehab area. Players like quarterback Rocco Becht and receivers Brett Eskildsen and Chase Sowell had limited reps, but their efforts were seen as valuable. “It was huge that Rocco got the reps he did, ” Campbell noted, praising his perseverance.Linebacker Tony Rojas, who tore an ACL last fall, has shown remarkable progress. Campbell commended his work ethic and leadership, suggesting Rojas could become a star if he stays healthy. Other positions—running backs, tight ends, and the offensive line—also showed promise during spring drills. Campbell’s optimism has been steady since his hiring. He believes the next 16 weeks of summer and fall camps will be crucial for further growth. “We’ve had a really positive spring practice, ” he said, acknowledging the hard work of both staff and players. When asked about the moment when relationships began to thaw, a player recalled the early winter conditioning sessions. “Waking up at 4:30 and training together forces you to bond, ” he said, emphasizing the importance of daily teamwork. Ultimately, Campbell hopes his team will provide each other with shelter from the looming storm. If they can stay tight-knit, he believes they’ll weather any challenge that comes their way.
