In the U. S. , finding a place to live is getting harder. Many people struggle to pay rent or buy a home. This is not just a personal problem; it affects the whole economy.
Lawmakers from different parties are starting to agree on solutions. They know that having a stable home helps people work better, stay healthy, and do well in life. But for many, this stability is still far away. Many low-income families spend more than half their money on rent. Others can't buy a home until they are much older. And every night, hundreds of thousands of people don't have a place to sleep.
Congress is trying to fix these problems. They are looking at ways to make it easier and cheaper to build new homes. They are also trying to make sure these homes are affordable for everyone. One bill, called the ROAD to Housing Act, passed the Senate. It aims to modernize housing programs and give local governments more flexibility.
Another big step is the expansion of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. This encourages private companies to invest in affordable housing. Experts say this could help build 1. 22 million new affordable homes in the next 10 years.
The main issue is that the U. S. has not built enough homes. Over the past 15 years, the country has built fewer homes than needed. This has made rents and home prices go up a lot. Between 2020 and 2023, rents went up by nearly 24 percent and home prices by 38 percent. Now, 42 million households spend more than a third of their income on housing.
High housing costs also hurt businesses and the economy. Companies in expensive areas have a hard time finding workers. Studies show that not having enough homes in big cities like New York and San Francisco has reduced the U. S. GDP by nearly 4 percent.
As one of the richest countries in the world, the U. S. should be able to provide decent homes for everyone. More than 75 years ago, the 1949 Housing Act set a goal to do just that. But that goal is still not met.
If Congress keeps working together, they can make a real difference. Fixing the housing crisis can help the workforce, boost the economy, and bring people together. With strong leadership, they can make sure everyone has a decent home and a fair chance to succeed.
