Building safer materials from volcanic ash
La Palma, SpainWed Apr 15 2026
Scientists found that ash from Spain’s 2021 Tajogaite volcano could help make greener building materials. They mixed it with strong alkaline solutions and tested how it behaves in water. The tests showed some metals like molybdenum (Mo) leak out more than allowed for safe landfills.
Other experiments revealed a surprising difference in how two sea creatures react. Tiny glowing bacteria stayed healthy even with the chemical release, but sea urchin embryos struggled to grow properly when exposed. This means we need to be careful when using volcanic ash in coastal areas.
The research also found that stronger alkaline mixes change how the ash behaves. Higher concentrations let more toxic ions float away, especially vanadium (V), molybdenum (Mo), and arsenic (As). Seawater made these metals stay dissolved longer, keeping them in the environment.
