Columbia Falls School District is pushing for a new charter school focused on trades. This isn't just any new idea; it's building on something they've already been doing well. For years, students from Columbia Falls have been working with Glacier National Park. They build cabins and other structures there. This partnership involves the school, the park, and the Glacier National Park Conservancy, which helps fund the program.
Now, the district wants to expand this idea to the old Canyon Elementary School campus. They're asking for state funding to make it happen. Six school districts in Montana are competing for a share of $1 million. Columbia Falls is aiming for about $347, 000 in the first year. They plan to start with 45 students and grow to 65 by the fifth year.
This charter school would teach more than just trades. It would also include math, English, and other skills. If approved, it would start on the high school campus in 2027 and move to the former Canyon Elementary School in 2028.
Columbia Falls' plan stands out because it's the only trade-focused charter school proposed this year in Montana. It already has a proven track record. Other schools are proposing alternative high schools or healthcare-focused programs. The district will find out in mid-January if they've been selected.
People who support this idea can send letters to the state board. These letters can be emailed to McCall Flynn or Lea Ann Munkres. Even though it's a charter school, it would still be part of the School District 6 Board. The goal is to attract students from all over the Flathead Valley.
