Bulgarian Babies: How Life Changes Affect Their Growth
Bulgaria, SofiaTue Jun 24 2025
Over the past 40 years, Bulgarian babies have been getting smaller. This isn't just a random thing. It's a sign of bigger changes happening in the country.
First, let's talk about weight. In the 1980s, the average baby boy weighed about 3447 grams at birth. By 2020, that number dropped to 3335 grams. For girls, it went from 3321 grams to 3179 grams. That's a noticeable difference.
But here's something interesting: babies were getting taller in the 1980s and 1990s. On average, boys grew from 50. 3 cm to 51. 2 cm, and girls from 49. 8 cm to 50. 5 cm. However, after the year 2000, this trend reversed. Both boys and girls started getting shorter by about 1. 2 cm.
Why is this happening? It's likely connected to changes in living conditions, healthcare, and even the mothers' health. When babies are born smaller or shorter, it can affect their health both now and in the future.
This information comes from a study that looked at over 11, 000 babies born in Sofia. The study used data from two hospitals and analyzed it using special statistical methods.
So, what does this all mean? It shows that the health of a population can change over time. And these changes can be seen even in the smallest members of society: newborn babies.
