In Burr Ridge, Illinois, the local school district is grappling with a high rate of teacher absenteeism. The problem isn't new, as this year, 38% of teachers missed at least 10 days. Why? Health issues are a major reason, says the superintendent. Other districts like Gower (33%) and Pleasantdale (25%) aren't faring much better, but they're below the state's 34% average.
Last year, Burr Ridge saw a slight drop from the previous year's number. Health challenges, maternity leave, and other absences contributed to this year's figure. The district is working on it, keeping an eye on attendance and ensuring substitute teachers are ready.
Meanwhile, Hinsdale High School District saw a big improvement, dropping from nearly 50% to 24%. Lyons Township High School, however, saw an increase to 27%.
The situation raises questions about teacher well-being and the impact on students. How can districts better support their teachers? And what about the students? More needs to be done.
