Bus and Train Collision in Bangkok Leaves Eight Dead
Bangkok, ThailandSun May 17 2026
The crash that happened on Saturday in central Bangkok turned a routine crossing into a tragedy. A freight train slammed into a public bus that was stopped on the tracks, setting the vehicle ablaze and pulling other cars in tow. Eight people lost their lives while 32 others sustained injuries.
Police have formally accused the train driver of negligence that caused death. The evidence points to reckless behavior, according to the head of the local police station. A similar charge is expected for the bus driver once he recovers enough to speak with authorities.
Investigators are still checking if more charges should be filed. The incident has prompted officials to tighten safety checks at crossings, especially after commuters expressed long‑standing fears about vehicles ignoring stop signals.
A 20‑year‑old commuter shared that people often pass through the crossing even when lights are red, which made this accident all the more shocking. He called for better enforcement of traffic rules.
Thailand’s roads are known to be among the world’s most dangerous, largely because safety standards are not strictly enforced. This incident highlights the urgent need for stronger oversight and driver education to prevent future disasters.
