What’s more, stealing stuff worth over $50, 000 or possessing stuff worth over $950 with plans to sell could land you in jail for a few years. Even car break-ins aren’t safe, with stricter penalties for swiped items. Major retailers are already upping their security game, locking up high-theft items or getting employees body cameras to deter thieves.
Governor Gavin Newsom, who’s been big on crime-busting, has pumped over $1 billion since 2019 to help local cops. These new laws aim to hit California’s rising theft problem head-on, while also offering ways like rehab for young offenders.
