California's Transgender Sports Policy Under Fire
California, USAThu Jun 26 2025
The federal government has accused California of breaking a key civil rights law by allowing transgender girls to join girls' sports teams. This is part of a bigger push by the current administration to stop transgender athletes from competing in women's sports across the country.
The Education Department wants California to change its rules. They say transgender women should not be allowed in girls' sports and that any records, titles, or awards won by transgender athletes should be taken away. If California does not agree, the federal government could cut off education funding.
This all started when California said transgender students could play sports based on their gender identity. The federal government then looked into the matter and decided that California's rules go against Title IX, a law that prevents sex discrimination in education.
The proposed solution would force California to tell schools to use "biology-based" definitions of "male" and "female. " Schools would also have to apologize to athletes who lost awards to transgender competitors. Similar demands were made to Maine, but that state refused, leading to a lawsuit.
California has 10 days to follow these new rules or face consequences. Meanwhile, a recent track meet allowed an extra competitor for a transgender athlete, which sparked more controversy. The federal government is now looking into this as well.
This issue shows the ongoing debate about how to include transgender athletes in sports while ensuring fairness for all competitors. It also highlights the changing policies under different administrations, with the current one taking a stricter stance compared to the previous one.
