Campus Safety Under Scrutiny: 60 Universities Face Federal Warnings
USATue Mar 11 2025
The U. S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has sent out letters to 60 universities. These institutions are currently under investigation for failing to protect Jewish students from antisemitic harassment and discrimination. The letters serve as a warning that if these universities do not meet their obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, they could face enforcement actions.
The OCR is concerned about the safety of Jewish students on these campuses. These students have been facing harassment and discrimination for over a year. This has disrupted their education and daily life on campus. The OCR believes that university leaders need to take more action to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
The universities that received these letters are some of the most prestigious in the country. They include American University, Arizona State University, Boston University, Brown University, and many more. These institutions receive significant public funding, which comes with the responsibility to adhere to federal antidiscrimination laws.
The OCR has the authority to enforce Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. This law prohibits any institution that receives federal funds from discriminating based on race, color, or national origin. National origin includes shared ancestry, such as Jewish ancestry. The OCR is taking these steps to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, can pursue their education in a safe and inclusive environment.
The OCR has also launched directed investigations into five universities. These investigations are in response to widespread reports of antisemitic harassment. The remaining 55 universities are under investigation or monitoring due to complaints filed with the OCR. The OCR is committed to resolving these complaints and ensuring that all students are protected from discrimination and harassment.
The OCR has made resolving the backlog of complaints alleging antisemitic violence and harassment a priority. This includes complaints that were allowed to languish unresolved under the previous administration. The OCR is working to ensure that all students have access to a safe and inclusive educational environment.
